1) Do you know what the rate of production is for these models for solid waste?
The rate of production for the Eco-250 is 250 Lbs. in a 10 to 15 hour.
The rate of production for the Eco-650 is 650 lbs. in 18 to 20 hours.
The time range depends on the moisture of the waste. The Ecovim has ways to determine when the load is complete. The unit will start testing the moisture levels at the lower end of the cycle times (10 hours of the Eco-250 and 18 hours of the Eco-650). However, the unit will not run longer then the max time (15 hours of the Eco-250 and 20 hours of the Eco-650).
2) Do you have any idea what the average cost is per volume of waste processed?
The average cost will be determined by the cost of electricity. To answer this question we will use the cost of electricity to be $.13 per kilowatt for peak hours and $.08 per kilowatt for off peak hours. Off peak hours start at 6 PM. Eco-250’s reactor volume is 42.2 gallons per cycle equaling about 250 pounds. The power consumption is 3 kW per hour for a 12 hour cycle. (Customer’s loads have been averaging around 12 hours)
Cost for peak hours—$4.68 per treatment time. Making it about $.12 per gallon
Cost for off-peak hours—$2.88 per treatment time. Making it about $.07 per gallon.
Eco-650’s reactor capacity is 158.4 gallons per cycle equaling about 650 pounds. The power consumption is 8 kW per hour for 18 hour cycle
Cost for peak hours—$18.72 per treatment time. Making it about $.12 per gallon
Cost for off-peak hours—$11.52 per treatment time. Making it about $.07 per gallon.
3) Do you have any idea what the opportunity cost might be (i.e. other capacity or options that might be limited by implementing use of this technology)?
The Ecovim units have several opportunity cost that can be realized. One being the reduction in trash hauling. For example, the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) wrote in their 29 Palms dehydrator pilot test conclusions “The current solid waste container infrastructure is 3 – 8 yd.3 dumpsters picked up three times per week, which equals to 72 yd.3 of capacity each week or 3744 yd.3 of available capacity annually. Using the 254 yd.3 remaining after dehydration of the solid waste, this would mean 1—8 cubic yard dumpster to be utilized being picked up once every two weeks.” DeCA also went on to say, “The weight reduction produced through the first dehydrator test indicate DeCA could achieve significant savings and meet solid waste diversion rates, as directed by executive order 13514.”
Another opportunity cost is that the Ecovim unit has a beneficial output. The sterile nutrient rich output is a great additive for a soil that lacks the proper nutrient levels. Using the output around facilities will reduce the purchase of fertilizer. According to the University of New Hampshire Extension Service, the output dose not only enhance the sole but will bind to fertilizer making it resistant to being washed away.
The cost savings recognized from both of these items in some cases has shown a rate of return as low as 2 1⁄2 years. The Ecovim’s life span is 15 years which gives the Ecovim an advantage over any of its competitors.
4) Do you have any idea what the hidden cost might be (i.e. upgrades or features that will need to be in place in order to operationalize the technology)?
The Ecovim unit has no hidden costs. We do not use any additives, chemicals, or enzymes to treat food waste. Ecovim holds several patents on this type of treatment of food waste. Ecovim is also the only one that can give you an output that can go directly into the ground.
5) Do you have any idea what the valued added opportunity might be (i.e. concurrent or parallel efforts that would be made more efficient through implementation)?
One of the areas that we have been able to identify as a value added opportunity is with staff that uses our units. In the Santa Fe Public Schools we have been able to reduce the amount of janitors required to handle the school lunch program from 4 to 3. This allows the unencumbered janitor time to continue cleaning the school cutting down on overtime and burnout. Another added value was the reduction in workmen’s compensation claim exposer. The schools that have implemented the Ecovim units have seen fewer claims from back injuries because the reduction in the number and weight of the garbage bags lifted into the dumpster.
